St Bees has four War Memorials, plus a Remembrance area in the north aisle of the church, including Sandwith memorials, much of which is part of St Bees parish. These have been well documented in the village web site and a link to the relevant page can be found below.
There is a full history recording all St Bees War Dead in the village web site –
There are a number of memorials within the church. Further details can be found in Caesar Caine’s book (if you can find a copy – out of print)!
W G Collingwood Village Memorial
Designed by W G Collingwood, this was the official village War Memorial. Now both this one and the Kenworthy one are considered official.
St Bees School Memorial
Pupils from the former St Bees School who died have their own memorial on the School terrace.
J D Kenworthy Village Memorial
J D Kenworthy, whose son was killed in WWI, felt the official memorial lacked impact and designed this second one.
Josefina de Vasconcellos Memorial
The Hand was erected in memory of those former pupils and staff of St Bees School who gave their lives in the World Wars.
(Work in progress)
There are a number of memorials around the interior of the church itself. At present I can’t add any information to what is displayed on the memorial itself.
